Community Immunization Campaign and Circle of Health

Events and actions report as of July 8, 2013

Events:

1) March 9, 2013: Latino Health Expo, Iglesia Christiana Restauracion, St Cloud

            Information booth staffed by Drs Jon Dennis, John Mahowald, and Pat Zook

            Discussed need for immunizations and provided bilingual information and displayed Spanish language posters with this message. 

2) April 29, 2013: St. Cloud Times newspaper interview with Frank Lee

Pat Zook, President of Stearns-Benton Medical Society discussed the goals and plans of the CIC and plans for the Circle of    Health.  We covered the real and present danger of pertussis in our community and recommendations for immunization.  The Times printed a color image of our “Got Mine!” lapel button. The article was published in the April 30, 2013 Times edition. 

 

3) May 9, 2013: Central Minnesota Community Immunization Campaign Kick-off Celebration

                     Guest speaker – Chris Ehresmann, Minnesota Department of Health discussed the

dangers of pertussis to an audience of 80 attendees at St Cloud State’s Atwood Ballroom.  Several project partners and participants in attendance.  The CIC video was shown publicly for the first time, produced by Patricia Krueger.  Several Campaign posters were on display for viewing and Campaign lapel pins, information cards and poster reprints were distributed to project partners for display in their respective work environments. A panel of experts including Drs Thomas Math and Jon Dennis, Jodi Lerass, RN, Alan Atchison, pharmacist and Chris Ehressman discussed questions from the attendees.

4) July 3, 2013: Summer by George! #1, St Cloud                

Information booth staffed by Pat Hart, Ann Romanowski, Pat Zook and Dick Hart networked with sever St Cloud Rotary members who sponsor these summer events.  They are an international organization with a local chapter of 120 participants and have a similar mission – to eliminate polio from the world. We engaged the new St Cloud Chief of Police, Blair Anderson and one of his sergeants for “Got Mine!” photos and signed them up as Project supporters.  Our booth displayed a new banner created by Kirk Lamb with the message, “Let’s beat whooping cough, get your shot!”.  The booth staffers wore the Campaign T-shirts (also created by Kirk Lamb) for the first time.  Several people stopped by to discuss whooping cough and the immunizations for it. 

5) July 3, 2013: KNSI Radio interview with Dan Ochsner, KNSI, St. Cloud

Pat Zook interviewed with radio show host Dan Ochsner on site of the July 3 Summer by  George!  We discussed the goals and activities of the CIC.  He had just recently had a program on his show that featured the opinions of a vaccine opponent and he asked about this.

4) Presentation to the 2013 Community Health Conference at Cragun’s, September 25-27 to discuss the CIC.  We were chosen to present from over 60 candidates.

2) Successful publicity photo shooting session March 16 and April 13 at the St. Cloud Great River Regional Library.  Several politicians, physicians and other community members lined up for photos for our “Got Mine!” poster campaign.  Kirk Lamb of Photography by kirk Lamb took dozens of great photos and later did some of the video for the Campaign video. 

3) Video recording of the personal whooping cough stories of a local family whose child suffered with whooping cough, and the story of a previously very active 85 year-old  man whose health declined for almost the whole year following a case of whooping cough. 

4) We created several marketing materials for the campaign including a Campaign Video, several Campaign posters featuring the “Got Mine!” pose of many people of varying demographic makeup including a pregnant woman, children, grandparents, young vigorous adults, politicians, a fireman, the Mayor, a Somali man, and several physicians.  We also have produced with Kirk Lamb’s work T-shirts, lapel buttons, and a show banner. Pat Krueger designed the information fact cards.  The pharmacists have been distributing a version of the fact cards with their prescription bags that they issue.  We have now printed over 2,000 of these cards. 

5) We gave T-dap shots at the Kick-off celebration May 9, 2013 and will be giving more at our next events. 

6) Wrote a successful grant application to the CentraCare Health Foundation and received $10,000 in grant money for our Community Immunization Campaign in April, 2013.

Activities of the CIC and Circle of Health Continued:

7) Signed a letter of understanding with the Minnesota Medical Association Foundation to act as the fiscal agent (501©3) for the CIC.  We may receive contributions through our fiscal agent.

8) We had many meeting of the core group of CIC project partners between January and May, 2013 to discuss goals, events especially the Kick-off celebration, and specific plans and strategies.  Our thanks to Dr. Mohammed Yassin for allowing us the use of his office space for many of our meetings.  As we ran out of space, we shifted our meeting site to the free meeting room accommodations at our beautiful new St. Cloud Great River Regional Library. 

9) Pat Zook visited Adult and Pediatric Urology and the St Cloud Surgical Center to provide the project partners listed above with Campaign materials and information.

10) Midtown Fitness Center kindly displayed one of our Campaign posters during the month of June.
